History - The first occupants of the Beaverton territory were Native Americans who lived in a village they called “Chakeipi” (meaning “place of the beaver”). The earliest settlers caught on and began referring to their land as “Beaver Dam”. Over time the name was eventually changed to Beaverton. The first Americans to set their sights on the Pacific Northwest were explorers sailing with their captain Robert Gray. Then in 1806, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark opened the door for settlement when they discovered a route form the east into Oregon Territory. By 1847 Beaverton had its first resident, Lawrence Hall. He built a grist mill, and as Beaverton grew many others liked the idea and built their own. These were mandatory in supporting the nearby growing agricultural communities. As Beaverton grew in population, the need for a system of roads became necessary. In order to survive the settlers needed to transport their goods to Portland for shipment. The Portland- Tualatin Valley Plank Road Company was created in 1850 with the purpose of building plank roads from Portland to Hillsboro. Canyon Road reached Beaverton in 1860. The City of Beaverton was formally incorporated in 1893. By 1893 Beaverton had its first mayor, a successful merchant named Alonzo Brockway Cady. At that time the population was 400.
