History - Happy Valley, Oregon is located in the southeast corner of Portland, Oregon in Clackamas County. The city lies between Mount Scott on the west and Scouter’s Mountain on the east. The first settlers in Happy Valley came from the Midwest, mostly from Indiana and Iowa. In 1852 the Deardorff family claimed the first piece of land in the valley and built a home. At that time it was named Christilla Valley after Christian and Matilda Deardorff. Then in 1891, the settlers built themselves a church of the Evangelical denomination. That same year the Deardorffs donated part of their land for the communities’ first school. It was a small, one room building with a steeple on top, and was constructed in the same place where Happy Valley School now stands. As the population grew, the valley was referred to as a “hollow”. Before Sunday church services, the local boys would drink Grandpa Deardorff’s apple cider. When they would arrive at church they would sing loudly and grin from ear to ear. Residents soon referred to them as “the happy boys from the Hollow”. Soon the area became known as Happy Valley and was officially incorporated in 1965.
About Happy Valley - Having always been a tiny community, it came as quite a change when the urbanizing of Happy Valleys’ surrounding areas began. By the 1990’s Happy Valley had become one of Oregon’s fastest growing cities. The increase in population continues today, currently the town is home to over 6,000 residents. The government consists of a mayor, and four city council members. Also involved in the communities’ decision making process is their own elected planning commission, a Park Advisory Urban Forestry Commission and a Citizen Traffic and Public Safety Committee.
