History - The first inhabitants of the land now known as Lake Oswego were the Clackamas Indians. The space between the Willamette and Tualatin Rivers became home to the earliest pioneers who settled into the areas first homesteads and farms. This was devastating to the Indian population, as they had no immunity to the many diseases which followed the settlers into their home. In 1847 a man named Albert Alonzo Durham founded the town of Oswego, Oregon, named after his birthplace in Oswego, New York. By 1855 the remaining Clackamas Indians were forcibly relocated by the federal government to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in Yamhill County. The Oregon Iron Company was incorporated by 1865 after the discovery of iron ore in the Tualatin Valley. Two years later came the Oswego Iron Company, The Oregon Iron and Steel Company, as well as the first blast furnace on the west coast. Oswego became connected to Portland in 1886, thanks to the Portland and Willamette Valley Railroad. The only downfall was that the railroad made it easier to import cheaper, higher quality iron from the Great Lakes region, which led to the end of the local iron industry. At the beginning of the 20th century the Southern Pacific Railroad took over the railway and added electricity to the line. By 1920 there were 64 trains running to and from Portland every day. In 1929 the service ended, however the Willamette Shore Trolley now offers tours. Lake Grove was annexed by Oswego in 1960 and the town was renamed Lake Oswego.
