History - The first residents of Sherwood, Oregon were the Tualatin Indians. It wasn’t until 1843 that the first settlers arrived. By 1870 Sherwood was home to many farmers and became a bustling community. In 1885 a man named J. C. Smock granted the railroad a right- of- way through his property. Then in 1889 he and his wife, Mary Ellen Sebastion, plotted and named streets surrounding the railroad tracks. The small town which emerged became known as Smockville. In the early 1890’s the main industry for the town was a brickyard that supplied building bricks to support the rapid growth of Portland, Oregon. Most of Sherwoods commercial buildings were built at this time, including the nine block area known as old town. The town’s brickyard closed in 1895 and in 1896 a fire broke out and destroyed most of the business district. After yet another fire in 1911, the city council recommended that all new buildings be fireproof. When the brickyard closed, Sherwoods main source of economy became fruit and vegetable canneries, which supported the city until 1971. Today the cities main industry is manufacturing.

Sherwood’s city center is surrounded by protected wetlands in the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge and rolling hills of fertile farmland.
