History - In 1852 the Tigard family, among others, traveled west and settled in an area known as “East Butte”. By 1886 the town had a school, general store, post office and a meeting hall. In 1888 the Emanuel Evangelical Church was constructed by the Evangelical Organization, and the towns name was changed to Tigardville. Then in the 1890’s John Gaarde opened a blacksmith shop. Between 1907 and 1910 Tigardville experienced a rapid acceleration of growth. Limited telephone service began in 1908, and a restaurant, grocery store, dance hall, livery stable and hotel were among the group of new buildings in town. When the Oregon Electric Railway arrived in 1910, they changed Tigardville to “Tigard” in order to distinguish it from nearby Wilsonville. A year later, in 1911, came the introduction of electricity. The Tualatin Valley Electric Company added Tigard to a service grid with Sherwood and Tualatin. Tigard continued to grow at a steady pace until it was incorporated in 1961.
