History - In 1853, Samuel Galbreath began a ferry service crossing the Tualatin River from a village he called "Galbreath". When the first bridge was built across the river in 1856, the town's name was changed to "Bridgeport”. Since it was located along one of the areas first roads, Boone's Ferry Road, Bridgeport thrived by attracting business from Portland throughout the Willamette Valley. The land across the river from Bridgeport was owned by a man named John Sweek, and in 1886 the Portland & Willamette Railway purchased rights to use his property for their railway. It was then that Sweek named his new town Tualatin, Oregon. A shopkeeper named Ben Cummins was the first to set up business in Tualatin, he built a two- story store, post office, livery stable, hotel and two saloons. By 1890, the town had gained several investors including John L. Smith who incorporated the Tualatin Mill Company, and made himself very successful at logging and lumbering. The Oregon Electric Railroad’s Portland- Salem line reached Tualatin in 1906, bringing with it plenty of business for the growing community. The City of Tualatin was incorporated in 1913 at which time an official government was formed.
About Tualatin - Tualatin is located in Washington County and is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The city lies just off the bank of the Tualatin River and has a vibrant suburban setting. The environment is of the most importance to the citizens of Tualatin. There are parks throughout the city and the streets are lined with trees. Tualatin is even recognized by the National Arbor Association for it’s commitment to planting and maintaining trees, it is known as “Tree City, USA”. The city leaders are working together to promote growth in their productive business community while preserving their individual traditions. Every summer Tualatin hosts its annual Crawfish Festival and Concerts on the Commons, just a couple more reasons it is home to such proud residents!
