History - In the early 1840’s a man named Robert Moore purchased 1,000 acres of landfrom the Willamette Indians. He then put together a cabin overlooking Willamette Falls and decided to build a town. No more than five years later Moore was the proud owner of four flour and lumber mills, and a ferry which traveled back and forth to Oregon City. In 1845 Robert Moore named his town Linn City after his close friend, Dr. Lewis F. Linn, a Missouri Senator. By 1850 Linn City included its own gristmill, sawmill, warehouse and post office. Robert Moore died in 1857, and soon after the town was destroyed by a fire. Local men immediately began rebuilding their town, however, less than a year later a flood wiped out the city. Incredibly, the town bounced back yet again when the Willamette Transportation Locks Company began to provide shipping passage over Willamette Falls in 1868. The town was finally incorporated in 1913 and flourished once again. It was decided by the city founders that the pioneer town established by Robert Moore would be honored. The city became West Linn, Oregon, as it remains today.
